The Cellular Phones And Our Children Debate

by Marlon Reeves on Mar.11, 2010, under multimedia

Do you remember the cell phones from a decade or so ago? They were do big and bulky that you couldn’t carry them around with you like you can now, and were mainly owned by business men. Even they left them in their cars a lot due to the weight. Today is a different world; practically everyone has one and they have replaced landlines in popularity.

If you work, or are going to be later home that you planned, a cell phone is great for getting in touch. But why are children walking around with them glued to their ears?

This begs an obvious question. How young is too young for a cell phone and when should children get their first?

For me, the right time to give a child their own phone is when they are around fourteen or fifteen. They will be going out a lot more and visiting other kids houses without needing supervision.

By giving them their own phone at this age they are old enough to appreciate it and it is also there for emergencies.

As cells should be for emergencies only, why would a child of 12 need one? If they go somewhere for the evening they should be getting dropped off and then picked up again so they shouldn’t need to ring you for anything. They aren’t old enough to appreciate that this is a serious piece of technology and they tend to treat them as toys.

Another good idea is to get your teen a pay as you go phone which they can top up with their allowance. This will avoid horrendous bills dropping on your mat thanks to your kid making hundreds of phone calls.

You could make a deal with our child, you will top it up once a month for them and of they use all their minutes before then they have to pay for the top out of their allowance.
