Online blogging makes it all possible. There are ample of blogging software in the cyberspace and they all offer the same service, which is a portal for us to express our ideas. Well, in a tough market, one would have to find his way to surpass his competitions. This is where plugins come in! Plugins are usually used to further enhance and extend the functionality of your blog. As one of the leading blog service, WordPress offers more than hundreds plugins, with some really brilliant function and some not-so-useful features. Eventually, it is still up to the blogger to decide which plugins are useful and which are not.

Extra protection is always welcomed. Akismet is one of the popular plugins offered by WordPress, where it filters all the spam comments against the Akismet web service, ensuring that this is no junk in your blog. Very useful and effective against those dreadful bots!

While with Get Recent Comment, you will see a sidebar featuring all your latest or tradeback comments. You will have complete access to the appearance, whether to show the comments by corresponding post or simply by date. The plug-in also allows you to filter unwanted pingbacks, ignore unwanted comments and etc. Plus, it works as a widget too.

Then, there is Google sitemaps which allows blogger to complaint XML-Sitemap of their WordPress blog with Google sitemaps. Google sitemaps supports all pages generated by WordPress, including the custom ones. All major search engines that carry sitemap protocol such as Google, YAHOO, MSN Search will be notified of every update you make to your WordPress blog. Doesn’t it sound really high-tech?

Flexible Upload, a WordPress plugin that intend to boost basic upload functionality. Blogger can resize their pictures to a specify the size and also affix a watermark signature in all the pictures. And then we have WP Super Cache, a plugin that will help in speeding up your WordPress web blog efficiently. This plugin works by generating html files, which are served by Apache without having to go through relatively troublesome PHP scripts.

Advertisement on blog is nothing but a common norm. Easy Adsenser intends to provide an effortless method to insert Goggle AdSense code into your WordPress blog. You will have a widget displaying all the ads in your sidebar, along with a Google Search box. Easy Adsenser is most definitely the first plugin that allows you complete control over everything related to Adsense.

twitME, an absolutely convenient plugin that lets blogger automatically post their new posts on twitter website. Besides, WP-GravatarWOrdpress Popular Posts will show the most popular posts in your blog by listing it out on a sidebar. Blogger is free to customize the widget according to his liking. The lists go on and on. At the end of the day, it is still up to the blogger, whether to enhance their WordPress blog with Goggle Sitemap or WP Super Cache, or perhaps both. We all know how cool it is to have a blog that have more than just words.

What You Need to Know about WordPress Blogging

by Randy Roedl on Nov.28, 2009, under web design

The blog creation community, known these days as the blogosphere, is one spoilt for choice when it comes to blog hosts. Despite the abundance of these hosting websites though, one manages to stand out from the rest.

So, what is this blog hosting site that has hosted more than-0000 blogs and running as of today with more than 5000 people per day downloading it? It is a name that has served Blog Writers for 5 years now, one which almost all Blog Writers especially the more seasoned ones are used to; WordPress.

WP proposes bloggers use of its open source project as a method to blog without spending a cent on blog hosting. All you need to do is simply go through the registration procedure which is the usual username and email whatnot. In a few seconds, you can get your blog up and running and doing this requires hardly any technical understandings at all as WP makes it as simple as it can be. Only your own creativity is the limit of blogging and with such convenient blogging methods these days, everyone should at least give it a go.

From its humble beginnings as a single bit of code self-hosted blog creation tool back in 2003, WordPress has become the leading one today. Before reaching the top, it had the likes of two big guns in blog creation, Greymatter and Movable Type to compete with. However, as WordPress started offering features unavailable in other web hosts, the Blog Writers slowly converted and new ones were pulled in making it the biggest player in the massive blog creation market. Being that, it is unsurprising that WordPress blogs are being viewed by the millions each day as it has become the web host used most widely.

Among the interesting features which helped WordPress become the success story it has become are: ? Quick start-up, easy customization and the fact that its services are free with the option of payable upgrades. ? A plethora of great themes to choose from which is always updated according to Blog Writers’ feedback. ? Posting is made easier with spell-check, auto-save, previews and photo features as well as the ability to stream videos. Statistics regarding visitors and their response towards certain posts are available in the advanced subscription. ? WordPress assures you zero worry for spam. ? Blog Writers have the choice of either allowing anybody to view their blog or make that exclusive to members only. This is a nifty privacy feature especially to those who treat their blogs as online diaries. ? Wordpress offers an easy to use ‘Import/Export’ function mainly for Blog Writers with blogs at other web hosts who wish to transfer their posts to WordPress. ? Any blog creation problems can be solved with the help of their 24-hour support team. ? Page Management allows users to treat the blog as a website depending of how they choose to manage it, a flexible option made possible by WordPress.

By providing features like these, it is no wonder so many bloggers worldwide are embracing WP. It is truly one for the bloggers. So, when are you going to be part of the blogosphere?

3 Spots Where Your Favicon is Shown

by David Broadhead, Ph.D. on Nov.22, 2009, under web design

If you’re curious about where your favicon is displayed, just follow along, and you’ll find out.

To do this, I’ll give you the URLs of two websites. They are two of my favorites, but most of you have probably never been to either one before. If you have, then choose the one you have never visited. That way you can see the favicon appearing suddenly, when the browser finds and displays it. Here are the URLs, but don’t go there yet! Wait a minute!

URL1: www.stormcarib.com

URL2: www.triddlers.com

1st Place: the Address Bar

All right. Let’s go. The first thing I want you to do is open a new tab ( or new window if you have to ). Now type in your URL in the Address Bar. Look quick – there’s the favicon! It’s just to the left of what you just typed in.

2nd Place: the Tab Bar

Are you using a tabbed browser, like Firefox or a later version of Internet Explorer? Then you should also see the favicon to the left of the website title in the tab bar.

3rd Place: Bookmarks or Favorites

If you’ve never been to this URL before, it obviously won’t be in your bookmarks yet. So click on ‘Favorites’, then ‘Add to Favorites’. Now just click ‘Add’. Go back to ‘Favorites’, and you should see your new favorite at the bottom of the list, with its favicon just to the left.

If you recently created your own favicon, but you can’t find it in any of its locations, don’t worry! This is a frequent occurrence. Keep reading:

1) Clear your cache.

2) If you still can’t find your favicon, close and reopen your browser.

3) If that still doesn’t work, there are only two possibilities left: a) Your browser doesn’t support favicons, which is highly unlikely, or b) You don’t really HAVE a favicon!

Just because is says ‘favicon.ico’, that doesn’t make it a REAL favicon. Make sure that you create a favicon properly, so that it can work properly. See below for more information.

I can show you where to go to create a favicon to use on your own website. Visit my blog at ScriptsForYourWebsite.com for lots of great easy-to-use plugins and scripts for your own blog.

Wordpress Blog Content is Valuable

by Randy Roedl on Oct.13, 2009, under web design

After you have chosen your theme and have all the wordpress plug-ins you want to use installed then you need to begin writing content for your blog. Without any content there is no value to your readers so make sure you add a good amount of posts to your blog in the beginning. Typically I will spend the first week writing three posts a day and submitting them to social bookmarking websites. This will allow you to have roughly twenty posts on your blog and all of them should be indexed from the social bookmarking.

Twenty posted articles is a good amount of content to start off with and after the first week you can begin writing only one post a day. This will give you more time to market and promote your blog to the masses of people out there looking for information. We’ll talk more about this later in the guide as for right now I want to talk about the content you write.

Either you or a writer will be doing the content creation for your blog and you’ll need to decide this on a few factors. You’ll need to make sure you have time each day to write a blog post and you’ll also need to have some writing capabilities. If you have neither then you might want to consider hiring a writer for your blog. Of course this costs money and takes away from money you could be making so if you can I would write your own blog posts. This way you can become more involved with your blog as well since you’ll be writing the blog posts.

Don’t expect just to throw up short meaningless written posts on your web blog and expect the traffic to start pouring in. You need to add valuable content to your web blog that isn’t found elsewhere often. If you just regurgitate what everyone else talks about then you’ll find it difficult to get readers since they read it elsewhere also.

Make sure you always offer some value in your posted articles though. For instance you can offer many things in your posted articles and you should focus on only one per post. You can write about news for the day, an educational topic or an opinionated topic. You can also write about how your day is going and whatever else you want at the bottom of your posted articles. This will help for the people reading your blog to relate to you. If the people can relate to your life then they will typically stick around and become a regular reader and contributor to your blog.

Once you have the initial surge of content indexed and ranking in the search engines You will start to see some search engine traffic. If you have chosen good topics then the number of visitors could be very large and it’s consistent. Your content is what will make you cash online as a blogger so make sure you spend long enough writing your posted articles. Keep things like titles and keywords in mind when you’re writing the post so that it’s optimized for your needs.

Writing is easy if you open your mind a little bit and once you start writing on a topic the written posts will begin to flow out of your mind. It’s always smart to write a handful of written posts, I recommend a week worth and keep them stored away in a document. This way if you get sick or go on vacation for a week you can load the pre-written written posts to your web blog and possess them written posts on the same schedule that you usually post them at. This way you don’t miss any days of adding written posts to your web blog as it could result in lost readers if you do miss writing for a few days.
