Web Design Hints And Tricks
by Michael Jamison on Apr.03, 2010, under web design
If you’re trying to advertise your product to more people, you can’t do better than a website. Your site isn’t just there for your current customers to access – if it’s designed well enough, you’ll be able to bring in more users and even hear their opinions on your products. With these web design tips, you can learn how to make your online presence known.
The most important part of your website is the content. This may seem obvious, but it’s something to keep in mind throughout the process of creating any page. Make sure every part of your website is useful – if you realize something isn’t enough on its own, combine that page with another. And while running ads on your site is tempting, and a good way to increase revenue, it’s important to keep the ratio of advertisement to content low.
If you do advertise on your website, not all ads are created equal. No one likes clicking on gaudy, flashing banner ads or pop-up windows – they may be eye-catching, but they’re also aggravating, and could keep users from coming back to your site. You should only use still images and unobtrusive text. That means no moving images, no music that plays by itself, and no invasive advertisements that will bog down your site. This will also help your website load faster for people who have slow connections.
Don’t use splash pages, or other fancy-but-useless gimmicks – all that you’re really doing is making an obstacle that your users need to get past in order to get to the real meat of your site. Ahead of programming any pages, try to “plan out” what it will look like; write down all the information you’re trying to convey before you start building the content (or before you hand it to your writers!) Never take shortcuts for your own convenience if they could inconvenience your customers. You’re organizing for them, not yourself.
Also make it easy for users to navigate throughout your site. This means you should have a convenient menu, like a sidebar, or a set of links at the top of your page, that links to every other page on the site. Make sure this menu also includes a link to your homepage. You can’t rely on a user being able to return with the “back” button; they could end up in the middle of your website from a link or a search engine.
Try to only use white backgrounds, even if images are tempting – or, if you’re hiring a graphics designer, ask them to keep readability in mind when they create your background. With all the different colors of text you can choose from, there’s no reason for your site not to be readable. You should also try not to have your content as wide as the page that it’s on. It makes it difficult for people to jump from one line to the next. If you’re not sure how your website will look to other people, change your screen resolution and go look at it again.
Of course, for the sake of accessibility, you want users to be able to contact you. Your contact page should be easy to find, easy to read, and have only correct, up-to-date information. It’s especially helpful if a visitor can just email you straight from your site. This is necessary for websites that sell or offer goods or services, and often helpful even for informational websites. That way, your information can be corrected or updated by your users!
All of these tips will help you create a user-friendly website. Of course, the last thing you need is to test it! As with any new project, explore your site as though you’re an uninformed visitor. Try to break things. It’s often helpful to ask several other people to proofread and test your website as well – especially if they have different browsers, operating systems, or computer models. That way, you get some feedback even before your site is launched.

Most Common Errors When Building A Website
by Adrianna Noton on Sep.02, 2009, under web design
Whether you are building a website for business or personal reasons, how you design the site will affect the number of visitors you attract and retain. When surfing the internet, it is not difficult to see how many websites owners have failed at designing a professional site. There are a number of common errors many people make when creating a website.
The following is a list of common mistakes to avoid when building your website:
1, A poorly organized design is a common error that will affect website traffic. Do not use a mish mash of banners, flashing animation, many bright colors, strange patterns, and annoying music. A cluster of distracting background designs makes a website look unprofessional and takes away from the sites purpose and message.
2. A website that takes a long time loading will often result in surfers losing patience and leaving the site. To avoid a slow loading website use a high speed internet connection, do not use a lot of graphics, and minimize the amount of video clips, music clips, and flash animation. This will drastically reduce loading time.
3. Websites that do not clearly convey their message tend not to have repeat visitors. Your home page should clearly state who you are and the mission of your website. Make sure you have a professional logo and domain name that is relevant to your site. The visitor should know exactly what business or service you are promoting. Focus is essential when building a website.
4. It is important to make sure your navigation tool is easy to understand and use. You want your visitors to freely and quickly move from page to page without getting mixed up. Your navigation links should be located at the top of the webpage or on the side.
5. Having quality content is essential to creating and maintaining a successful website. Quality and well written content that is updated regularly will encourage visitors to return to your site. You should also make sure the content is relevant to your site.
6. Websites that are not search engine friendly will result in a lack of visitors. You should have relevant key words, unique content, quality reciprocal links, appropriate advertisements, small pictures, email address, domain name, and a contact phone number and address.
7. Cookie cutter websites tend not to be as popular as original designed websites. Websites that have the same layout and content as other sites will score low in the search engine rankings. A website built from scratch will attract more visitors.
Your web design represents the vision and product or service that your company is offering. A poorly designed website sends the message to your visitors that your product or service may not be high quality. How well your website succeeds depends on the overall impression a visitor receives. It is important to take the time to plan and implement a website that is professional, user-friendly, and is appealing to your targeted visitors.

What Is The Difference Between Web Design And Graphic Design?
by Amy Nutt on Aug.22, 2009, under web design
Although web design and graphic design both use images, text, and typeface to create a desired method of communicating ideas, designing for web and print are two different practices. Graphic designers have been around since print media was created, while web design came into being when the Internet was developed. Before choosing a print designer or web designer, it is important to understand the differences between web design and graphic design.
Graphic Design
Graphic Design includes any type of design that has been created and printed. Graphic design uses the blending of technology and art to communicate messages and ideas. The graphic designer utilizes a number of communication tools to deliver a message from a client/company to a specific audience. Graphic design illustrations can be found in magazines, newspaper arrangements, newspaper ads, billboards, logos, brochures, books, labels on a variety of product packages, and much more. Graphic designers create the layout design for a variety of types of print advertisements. The print design is normally 2-dimensional. Each design component is created for a fixed size display. The main tools used are image and typography. Images are used to communicate a mood or emotion.
The audience reacts to the images and the advertising messages that they receive. Typography is a type-based design where words are used to convey a message. The designer will focus on the appearance of the words such as lettering size, location, shape, and color. They are designed to catch the attention of the consumer, enhance the ad display, identify the product, and help convey the advertisers message to the targeted audience. Graphic designers work with market analysts, illustrators, and photographers as well as with typesetters and printers and other production experts to in order complete the entire ad design project.
Web Design
Web Design is task of creating a web page on the internet. Web designers work for businesses creating and implementing their websites. They work exclusively on web sites. A Web designer designs a graphical display of content and images that is displayed on the Internet in the form of a web page. They employ a number of web applications such as HTML, CSS, XHTML, JavaScript, PHP, Photoshop, and images such as JPG. The function of Web designer includes all of the technical aspects of creating a website, such as the coding and writing of web pages.
Both graphic designers and professional web designers are specialized to use such applications as color to create a mood or set a tone. They know how to communicate ideas and messages through such technical expressions as using the meaning of symbols to convey an idea. As well, they know how to use shapes, objects, and colors to provide balance and equilibrium to communicate to a targeted demographic and inform and encourage them to take a certain action such as buying a product.
Both web design and graphic design play an important role in the advertising, promotion, and sales of products and services. Choosing a professional web designer or graphic designer will depend on ones particular area of business.
The Importance of Usability in Web Design
by Amy Nutt on Aug.13, 2009, under web design
No matter where you look these days, different designs for websites are starting to become more popular. Even though there are website designs out there right now that have certainly done a lot to forward the case for interesting and innovative new designs, there are still some core principles that remain at the heart of every good website. One of these core principles is the principle of usability, something that is always going to be hip in web design. Some people have problems grasping this concept. For those people, this article should prove helpful.
What is Usability?
This is a question that people ask all the time. People tend to be familiar with visual attractiveness and general content, but usability is a concept that most people dont think about (if at all) until the end of the actual design process.
To put it simply, usability refers to the idea of how the website is used by users. In other words, if a user can come along and use your website easily, you have a high usability rating. If, on the other hand, it is rather difficult to use your website for the average new user with an average level of modern internet knowledge, your website will not have a high usability rating in the slightest.
We have all been to websites that had us wondering exactly what the creator was thinking when they made the navigational buttons for them. We have all also been to websites that were absolute delights to navigate because of how conceptual and intuitive the entire interface and interactive element actually was. For that reason, everyone that has ever surfed the internet has a general level of understanding and sympathy for the struggles that people go through when trying to create web design with high usability.
The Importance of Usability
There are some people out there that would argue quite vehemently that usability is something that is not really that important. In fact, there are people that still make their living through the creation of thousands of different Adsense pages in the hopes that they can make a few pennies per page per day and have that amount add up to something impressive when all of the different websites are added together. These are people that are not interested in usability, but rather just impressions and clicks.
At the end of the day though, the internet is moving away from these people. The web 2.0 revolution has made interactivity one of the biggest elements of the average new internet site today. If you want people to keep coming back to your site, you need to make your site usable. If you want to make money off the internet these days, you need to have a site that people can keep coming back to. That is essentially the way the internet works these days and you are either going to adapt to it or your business is going to die off. At the end of the day, it really is just that simple.
